Adam Rex is my all time favorite children’s book author/illustrator right now! His stories are so quirky and different. His artistic style is like nothing I’ve seen before in a kids book. I can honestly say that each turn of the page is just as exciting for me as it is for my daughter. The illustration and typography in each story is really refreshing!
In Pssst! :

…all the animals in the zoo seem to need something un- animal-in-the-zoo -ish. What could it all be for? I laughed out loud when we finally got to that part (seriously though! check out the sloths!!!). My little girl just loved that she got to sat “pssst!” a bajillion times. That includes all the times she’s said it randomly since we got this book. Plus, animals… can’t go wrong with toddlers and animals right?

As the stories goes on, the tree fills up!

I have a permanent soft spot in my heart for that clown by the way. These are pages from Tree-Ring circus. As you can see above, the way the words flow is exciting, the typography is exciting, the illustration is exciting… As an avid looker-atter (totally a word, I say so!) my daughter has so much to look at even when the page is “just” a list of what’s in the tree. As a bedtime story teller who totally gets into the voices and expressions in each book (don’t get me started on The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog! ) I.LOVE.this.book. None of the animals/people actually speak, but just the way some of the words are positioned on the page convey emotion and excitement.
So, as you may have noticed by now, I’m really excited by Adam Rex ! Pick up his books and see if he excites you and yours too!
